Today is the French Fête Nationale ( national holiday) le quatorze juillet (fourteenth of July), known to Americans as Bastille Day. Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille Prison on July 14, 1789. The storming marked the people destroying the King’s absolute and arbitrary power and giving it to the people. It began the French Revolution, which would result in the forming of the First Republic. One year after the revolution Bastille Day became a national holiday during the Fête de la Fédération, which celebrated the conclusion of the French Revolution. Just as we recently celebrated our Independence Day we would like to say to the French, although not customary, Joyeux Quatorze Juillet!
Celebrate by making some crepes, a French favorite!
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
Directions:
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and the eggs. Gradually add in the milk and water, stirring to combine. Add the salt and butter; beat until smooth.
- Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each crepe. Tilt the pan with a circular motion so that the batter coats the surface evenly.
- Cook the crepe for about 2 minutes, until the bottom is light brown. Loosen with a spatula, turn and cook the other side.
- Fill with your fruit of choice, jam, whipped cream.
- Roll or fold and top with flavored syrup and powdered sugar. Serve hot.
