Wondering what $6 million dollars can buy today? For antique lovers a Chippendale commode. Last month during the “Important Furniture, Silver and Ceramics” at Sotheby’s London all the talk was about a George III commode, named the Harrington Commode. The piece of antique furniture was considered to be in great condition because it lacked warping. The Harrington Commode features gilt-lacquered rose- and tulipwood covered with intricate, floral-themed marquetry with brass mounts and feet. The commode reached such a high price not because of it’s astonishing condition, beautiful design or the fact that is was once owned by the 10th Earl of Harrington. The Harrington commode reached the high price of $6 million because it was crafted by Thomas Chippendale. The antique commode is an example of his late, Neo-classical style.
